I am also wondering if connections that haven't been used for a certain amount of time, should be automatically destroyed. I assume that if they are needed again, that they would be reestablished?

agree. we should add an idle connection deletion mechanism, regardless of topics pointing to the connection.
connection should be reestablished on demand.

Unfortunately I won't be able to help out with this, I am changing jobs next week and I doubt that Ceph will remain a part of my work... Sorry!
