The first attempted backport, https://github.com/ceph/ceph/pull/30021, was closed because it cherry-picked the wrong commit due to a typo in the "Pull request ID" field of the master tracker issue.

This backport (to mimic) is non-trivial because fea035e038436a3021f12660a12f789c561b3279 does not cherry-pick on top of mimic cleanly and it's not obvious at first glance how to resolve the conflict.
