this looks like a problem when we are trying to use mpi over a mix of precise and trusty:

ii  mpich          3.0.4-6ubunt amd64        Implementation of the MPI Message
ii  mpich2         1.4.1-1ubuntu1 Implementation of the MPI Message Passing In

is a huge version skew.
