$SUBJ says it all, almost - The error is:
admin:~ # ceph ping mon.node1 [errno 2] RADOS object not found (error calling ping_monitor)
yet on the same host in the same environment,
admin:~ # ceph ping mon.*
works fine and connects to mon.node1 (which is the only MON running)
