Nathan, I fixed conflicts with cherry-pick 5de5876a535537f7878615898bb9cf7887204cb1 and ran two simple tests to verify the feature is working (it requires manual verification)
I am not very familiar with the backport process so I asked for PR against the jewel branch and update the Fixes# tag to match this ticket.
The PR is available at:
https://github.com/ceph/ceph/pull/10167
On top of this PR it is pending to apply https://github.com/ceph/ceph/pull/9689 and the feature will be backported fully.
I can test the final feature when merged if it makes sense.
