This fixes a regression in 65da5ba216cafb8a91893d0e7fc092209f0fb286 but that commit isn't in mimic.

$ git branch --contains 65da5ba216cafb8a91893d0e7fc092209f0fb286 | grep mimic
$

I'm backporting that commit along with the fix - we'll see what the reviewers have to say about it.
