Documentation #58723

jerasure.org has been grabbed by a gamblin SEO link farm, remove all references.

Added by Oliver Schmidt about 1 year ago. Updated 11 months ago.

Description

The former homepage jerasure.org of the C library used in Ceph's default Erasure Coding plugin apparently has been grabbed by a non-trustworthy entity. It still looks plausible at first, but at a closer look now contains interesting sentences like these:

»What it does is change the software for doing the Galois Field backend. This also enables the use for online casinos, as for the German market quite some companies possess Cas*no De*tschland integrations.« (censored by me for anti-SEO reasons)

The last plausible snapshot in the Internet Archive is from 2020-02 [1]. The next one from 2021-03 shows a fresh Wordpress Hello World page [2], indicating the takeover of that site. The project's own gitlab at https://lab.jerasure.org has beeb shut down as well.

jerasure.org is still referenced in several places of Ceph:
- latest docs still link to it, e.g. on https://docs.ceph.com/en/latest/rados/operations/erasure-code-jerasure/
- the Ceph fork of jerasure, which is now vendored, still references this page. It hasn't been modified since 2015, but you probably still do not want to send people to a fake site deliberately https://github.com/ceph/jerasure

As the docs mainly link the jerasure homepage as a recommendation for further reading, it makes sense to check which information (e.g. docs or a whitepaper) used to be on that site, whether it is available somewhere else, or – if that's not the case – the Ceph project shall host a copy of these information itself.

Thanks for taking care of this.

Would you mind also changing/ removing the "About" link on the jerasure repo fork of ceph? https://github.com/ceph/jerasure
Or do you think that does not matter, as the readme still points to the fake site anyways?
