We will soon start having different classes of machines running different distros. In some cases we may choose to reimage machines before running tests to ensure they have the right distro on them, but this takes time, and we probably want to maintain pools of machines running the most popular test platforms. This means that we need to be able to track what is installed on a particular machine and select machines running the desired OS.

Part of this has been implemented with the addition of an arch field in the database. What remains is a set of syntatic / command design issues. In the old days (before vms), the machines had fixed distros so distro selection was not an issue. It was a "you want an ubuntu machine, give it an ubuntu machine" philosophy.

Now that vms exist, you can specify the vm distro with a teuthology option. This, however, has not been integrated into the suites yet.
