I'll be honest and say I don't like late merges that touch real code (not just tests) because they can introduce regressions into the actual release that users deploy on their clusters.

But if Patrick says that it's OK and it fixes a test failure, then by all means.

Let's delay this for the next minor release. Downstream can cherry-pick the fix and users can change their configs easily enough.
