what kernel version are you running?

your server version looks quite old. can you try the latest?

Running kernel 2.6.39
server version:

ceph version 0.29.1-479-g7dd919c (commit:7dd919c2b4c90c51758062c32accf22fff5b352a)

It happens only for the directories that are subdirs of root. Might be something to do with the code in dir.c(ceph_mkdir)

req->r_dentry_drop = CEPH_CAP_FILE_SHARED;
req->r_dentry_unless = CEPH_CAP_FILE_EXCL;

this was fixed by commit:5dc09dd6b81c622960f628acdabda9eac8af1ceb on the server and commit:2f90b852e3ae73889d7f6de6ecf429b9b6a6b103 in the kernel client.
