Weird. Something else prodding iptables in the background while tests are running? First time I've seen this error.

It suggests using "-w", but there is no such option to iptables :-/

Ah, okay, this is because Filesystem._one_or_all executes in parallel, and I was starting to run routinely with multple MDSs on one node, so that iptables updates for each MDS were colliding.
