Description

As proposed by Joel Davidow in the January 18th User + Dev Meetup:

This presentation proposes a feature request to add support for tape as a storage class with lifecycle management
for object storage. Because of cost, data center space usage, data retention requirements, and expected data access patterns,
the DKIST Data Center at the National Solar Observatory would benefit greatly if Ceph object storage included native support
for use of tape as a storage class. I am currently investigating if it is technically feasible to incorporate the use of tape
for object storage through our microservice-architected applications (i.e. outside of Ceph), and if so to assess the level of effort
required, but this is a significant effort with an uncertain outcome. If tape were supported by Ceph as a storage class with
lifecycle management, that would be a massive win for us. It might also support design of a way to protect against ransomware
attacks, which would also be a major win for us.
