breadcrumb is a good candidate for a component, and I agree that having a component for breadcrumb is an improvement, and deserves a dedicated issue.
Deciding between some opensource breadcrumb component, or implementing a custom one requires some tests / experiments.

We should evaluate if it makes sense to replace our custom implementation with an existing one, e.g. angular2-crumbs
