I would love to have ceph with first class support for windows

Starting with Pacific, the Ceph clients can be natively used on Windows: https://docs.ceph.com/en/quincy/install/windows-install/.
Note that running OSDs on Windows still isn't supported and that's unlikely to change in the near future.
